 Log homes

Wood as a building material has been used since time immemorial and there is no worthy alternative to it even at the present time. In Western Ukraine, wooden architecture has long been rightfully called art, and the monuments of wooden architecture that have been preserved there, despite their impressive age - admire their constructive splendor and architectural expressiveness.

Most often, we build wooden houses from round logs or beams, using softwood (spruce, pine, spire, cedar). This choice is not accidental, because it is characterized by a more monotonous structure, as a result - logs are better combined with each other and do not cause a design resonance. In addition to all this, thanks to the resin, which it contains - significantly reduces the risk of fungal and rot. As practice shows, the pine, growing in the most northern regions of the country - Zhytomyr, Chernihiv, Sumy regions, where the trees grow more slowly and do not crack, therefore has a unique strength and thermal insulation properties.

For the construction of wooden log homes, as well as handcrafted custom log cabins, our company uses straight and long logs, which are harvested in winter. They are less susceptible to cracking and uneven shrinkage, in comparison with the forest harvested in summer, have less moisture, are not affected by the fungus and do not turn blue.

The thickness of the walls of the planned building depends on the climatic conditions in the construction area. At a temperature of -40 ° C in winter, the diameter of the rounded log should not be less than 20-25 cm. Given the fact that in Ukraine today the temperature rarely drops below 30 degrees - it is recommended to build log cabins with logs 18-21 cm in diameter. Making up our projects of cottages, we set these sizes to make a general estimate.

Unlike wild logs, whose difference in diameter of the log in the opposite ends can reach 10 centimeters - the log that has been processed by factory methods (rounded and calibrated) is the same on both sides and is more closely adjacent to the support deck.

Construction of Wooden Log Houses - Technological Features:

We lay the walls of the wooden house from dried logs by installing them on a special oak base treated with antiseptics and flame retardants. The first row consists of half-log to ensure the stability of the entire supporting structure - all subsequent rows are constructed from logs of the same diameter. On each log there is compensatory cut to prevent cracking of logs throughout the area. Also, on special equipment, an undercut is chosen, in which a linen tow, jute or natural moss is fastened. The quality of all log houses is determined by the quality of all grooves (undercuts). The denser it is, the warmer the house will be, and the less moisture it will get into it. If the groove does not fit tightly to the packs, or is only adjacent to the edges, there is a high risk of increased and uneven shrinkage of the entire structure of the wooden house, or even in some cases of its skewing.

Corner connections

The next important point in the construction of wooden houses is the technique of joining walls in the corners - there are two ways:

1.                           Connection "in the paw" - a classic corner is formed without protruding logs. It is colder, and considering the method of connection - "dovetail" - there is a high probability of its cracking and, as a result, damage to the entire structure of the building.

2.                           The conjunction "into oblo", that is, with the remainder - the ends of the logs protrude at corners for a certain distance (the loss of timber on one row of the wall is from 30 to 70 centimeters). The advantages are obvious - a much warmer building and a beautiful aesthetic appearance. Our projects of cottages mainly take into account this method of joining in the corners.

After the house has completely shrunk and dries, all connections between the logs are subject to caulking - filling with jute or another insulation. To ensure the pristine preservation of the wooden house for decades - over the caulk, regardless of whether there are cracks or not - it is necessary to apply a special, high-strength sealant. In the market there is a huge amount of this product. With a price 2-3 times higher than that of competitors, they do not crack after 3-5 years, but perform their protective functions even after 20-30 years. As you know, the miser pays twice. Add to this the cost of sealing work, for which you will have to pay each time - and you will end up getting a price of ten times as much for the initial, combined with a high risk of damage to the entire wooden structure.

Log cabins connections.

No less important nuance, which people should pay attention, is how to cut the bowls to connect the logs using the method of connection "into oblo." To date, the following types of bowls are practiced (not including the Norwegian bowl, which is used for the carriage):

1.                              Traditional (Russian) bowl - has a semicircular shape, cutting which is possible both on special equipment - by the factory method, and manually in the process of construction, in order to more accurately fit the logs to each other, taking into account the peculiarities of wood shrinkage.

2.                              The Canadian bowl is a complex shape, similar to a triangle, which is manually cut and can be made with a spike to increase the thermal insulation properties, and without it.

When building wooden log cabin, it is also necessary to strictly calculate the consequences of the process of shrinkage. For example, to install doors and windows, the dimensions of the openings that are made for them should be more above the boxes at 6-8 cm for doors and 5-7 cm for windows. Specialists of the “Log House” company developing projects for cottages take into account all of the above nuances.

When you are looking for a company that builds wooden houses, pay attention also to such necessary technologies of wooden architecture as:

-                           Hanging outer corners in order to reduce cracks in the walls of the building after shrinkage and drying.

-                           The connection of the ends of logs in the cuts with the help of special metal ties, and not the "dovetail" method.

-                           Creation of cracks in the cutting of the Canadian bowl for more densely fitting the logs to each other and jamming the cracks in the cuts.

-                           If necessary Use the concealed spike in the cup to reduce the airflow and increase the rigidity of the entire structure.

-                           Application of a deeply permeable (up to 15 centimeters) antiseptic in places inaccessible to natural ventilation to prevent the appearance of fungi, mold and beetles.

wooden house

First of all Our company is focused on the construction of wooden houses and other environmentally sound housing, which meets even the most sophisticated requirements and at the same time remains available to everyone. We do not have a reference point for technological conformity to domestic manufacturers; we work according to the Canadian standards of quality of wooden housing construction - Log Building Standards.

A modest bath in your countryside, a stylized cafe or restaurant, a cozy hotel or a chalet villa high in the mountains - all these projects can be easily realized by us in a short time and at a fair price. If you want to create a truly unique structure - do not be afraid to combine different building materials, as they do in the USA and Europe. Build a house where one floor will be built of refined, hand-crafted stone or brick, and the top of the structure is wooden. Or, for example, a hexagonal villa with a fireplace hall, with ceilings of 5 meters high, elegant columns and wooden stairs inside. For acquaintance and choice of the design idea - we recommend to see the gallery of interiors of wooden houses, and also to revise projects of cottages in the corresponding section of the site.

The first priority of Log House is the full implementation of the wishes of our customers at the highest level. That's why we chose the most modern construction technologies that ensure the service life of a wooden house for at least 100 years and give us the opportunity to create fully authentic projects, thereby emphasizing the status and design taste of our customers.

We provide services for drawing up a detailed plan (landscape design and drawing up engineering spreads and schemes, estimates of materials, etc.), procurement of materials for the implementation of future construction and the actual construction of the structure itself (including turnkey design - the installation of own door production, windows, laying of parquet or floorboard, upholstery lining, installation of stairs and arched receptions).

All stages of work on the construction of wooden houses are carried out by experienced architects manually according to the project developed for you. As a result, we get a traditional wooden architecture, attractive, environmentally friendly, cozy and at the same time five times cheaper than its brick analogue house.
